The Independence boys golf team closed out the regular season at 9-1, sweeping conference play to stay perfect. They continued their success into the postseason with a commanding second-place finish in sectionals. The team suffered a heartbreaking loss at the division tournament which ended their season.
This year’s group was loaded with experience, as all six starters returned: Kaden Schuette, Johnny Walsh, Anderson Jolliffe, David Crooks, Landon Eichler, and Owen Jenks. Together they put together an amazing season and one that will go down in school history, showing both consistency and composure under pressure.
Junior Johnny Walsh is a 3-year varsity starter for the golf team and he took home first-team honors. Walsh talked about the team’s success, saying, “it wasn’t the ending we hoped for, but the golf team had a fun and successful season. The boys brought home the conference title and had plenty to be proud of along the way. This is a step in the right direction on our path to the state championship next year.”
Junior Kaden Schuette is also a 3 year starter and took home the CVC Metro MVP and first team honors. We asked him about the team’s season as well and he said, “the golf season ended in a disappointing way as we did not make states as a team which was the goal from the beginning. I do think that our team improved a lot this year and we are ready to make a run for states next year.”
Finally, the boy’s head coach Lisa Kemenyes described the season saying, “this year was great. Undefeated in CVC matches 2nd and 3rd in preseason and post season CVC tournaments to be the CVC Champions. Out of the main 5 golfers and the 2 rotating 6 men.”
Schuette was MVP and 1st team honors; Crooks and Walsh were 1st team; Jolliffe, 2nd team; and Jenks and Eichler, Honorable Mention. The team achieved All-Conference.
The team took 2nd in the sectional tournament at Bunker Hill, followed by a heart-breaking loss at districts, missing again by a few strokes.
Returning golfers are ready to put in the offseason work and be better than ever next year!
