This year, IHS partnered with the Cuyahoga County Library to obtain library cards for all students. English teacher Mrs. Jean Kanzinger initiated this idea last year.
“The Cuyahoga County Public Library, which is just around the corner from the high school, offers a tremendous number of resources for our students, including research databases, print and online books, and audiobooks. Last year, I had my students get their own library cards, but partnering with the library makes that process so much easier,” Mrs. Kanzinger explained when asked about the inspiration for this project.
Students now have access to the wide range of resources the library has to offer. From research papers to games and toys, the library has it all. The library offers a lot of things other than books, like free access to movies and video games. They also have the New York Times Games linked on their site. “Having a library card gives our students access to peer-reviewed research databases, which is important for research writing. Students can borrow digital books from their computer or use their card to sign out physical materials at a local branch,” Kanzinger added.

Two of our students, Kevin Leneghan and Grace Nells, have taken advantage of these cards and the library. “Before, we could only visit to look at books, but now Kevin and Grace can actually check out materials themselves. It’s been exciting for them to have that independence and responsibility,” Intervention Specialist Mr. Matthew Silvestro shared. “We’re also taking advantage of some of the classes the library has to offer. In November, we will be heading back for a silk scarf dyeing class!”Silvestro added.

The library offers a variety of classes you can take for free! They offer a range of activities, from tote bag making to cooking classes, and a diverse selection of other services. The library also offers PSAT and ACT practice tests as well as practice driving tests. Even if students do not use the card for school, the library has things they need for their real lives.
Independence Superintendent Mrs. Kelli Cogan commented, “I think having a library card and being able to do these things while you were in high school is a great opportunity for our students.” Cogan added that she thinks the cards are beneficial to classes and students, even outside of the classroom.
IHS students have also been using their cards. In CCP English, students have used their cards for class and are excited to have some of the resources the library offers. Students outside of the class have also taken advantage of the cards, using them to watch movies or read books.
“Movies. I’m excited for the free movies.” Sophomore Owen Malone said.
“I’m probably most excited for the movies.”Freshman Evan Grassian commented.
