IHS English teacher Ms. Rebecca Lozier won the PTO Above and Beyond Award on May 21st during her Honors English II class. Her students, Maya Toth and Alyssa Hujarski, nominated her for the award and helped present it to her.
The PTO Above and Beyond Award is presented by the PTO to IHS teachers based on student nominations. The winner receives a certificate, a check, and cookies for their class.
Toth and Hujarski nominated Lozier because they felt she had a meaningful impact on the classroom. Hujarski said, “She is very supportive, and she takes time to guide students to success. She brings overall positive energy to the classroom.” Additionally, when discussing the impact of her teaching, Toth explained that Lozier “is thoughtful and patient with us, and teaches us how to improve our writing.” Additionally, both students explained that Lozier has been an excellent teacher and also an inspiration for them.
Lozier appeared surprised when she won the award and said she felt honored to receive it. While Lozier has taught high school English in Virginia, this is her first year at IHS where she teaches ninth and tenth grade English. Lozier said, “I still feel quite new here to a degree. I feel very lucky as the Independence community has been so welcoming to me.”
“I try to show that I care, and so it is nice to know that my students feel cared for and supported by me,” Lozier added.
