The Iron Chef class offered by Family and Consumer Science teacher Mrs. Kelsey Whitacre is back again this semester and is cooking up creativity. The class of seven students functions like to the Iron Chef show. Students participate in cooking a diverse range of dishes in a limited amount of time. Students who have taken Foods 101 are eligible to take the Iron Chef class.
Mrs. Whitacre initially started teaching the class to add variety to the course offerings, and has since grown to love Iron Chef. She also went on to say that students get “a voice over what is done,” and that the class is “very hands-on.”
Students express a variety of opinions about which dishes are best.

“My favorite thing we have made in the wonderful class was definitely our elegant handmade burgers,” noted Senior Josh Peters. He also said he feels prepared, and believes he can create complex dishes now.
Sophomore Tess Rienerth said her favorite think was “a Mexican dish which includes tacos with homemade ranch sauce and churros.” Rienerth decided to take the class because she thought it would be different from any other class she had taken. She believes she is gaining good cooking skills for the future.
“My favorite thing I made was the Mexican street tacos,” said sophomore Peyton Bechlem. She took the class because she likes Mrs. Whitacre and thinks cooking is fun. She said she feels more prepared for the future and is feeling more comfortable in the kitchen.
Whitacre often includes staff by inviting teachers to serve as judges.
Between the quick cooking and the near-constant movement, Iron Chef has taught students how to cook under pressure, and have a newfound appreciation for cooking, providing skills that will last a lifetime.
