Claire Dailey, a junior here at IHS, has been selected as the January Student Spotlight at CVCC, where she studies Sports Medicine through the Health Careers program.
Dailey said she chose the program because it connects directly to her future goals. “I want to go into physical therapy, and this program felt like the best fit for me,” she said.
At CVCC, she spends her mornings in the sports medicine classroom before heading to Independence High School in the afternoon. She admitted the schedule can be demanding. “It’s definitely challenging because I have to study a lot,” she said. “But it’s really fun, and it’s worth it.”
One of her favorite parts of attending CVCC has been the people she’s met along the way. “I like meeting students from other school districts,” Dailey said. “We spend a lot of time together in class and doing labs, so everyone gets pretty close.”
Dailey has also gained hands-on skills through the program that she knows will help her later on. “I’ve learned first aid skills and how to do taping and wrapping,” she said. “Those are things I didn’t expect to know this early.”
According to her instructor, Shawn Fahey, Dailey’s recognition came from her consistency and attitude in class. “Claire comes to class every day with a smile on her face and ready to work,” Fahey said. He added that she works well with all of her classmates, even though they come from eight different school districts. “She gets along extremely well and works in groups equally well with everyone.”
Fahey also noted that Dailey takes pride in her work and holds herself to a high standard. “She maintains a strong academic level and really cares about what she does,” he said.
Dailey said being chosen for the Student Spotlight made her feel beyond proud. “It feels good to be recognized for the work I put in,” she said. One accomplishment she is especially proud of is her strong performance on her midterms, which she attributes to the effort she puts into the program.
When asked to describe her CVCC experience in one word, she didn’t hesitate. “Dedication,” she said.
