Sophomore Lila Manfredonia made school history on March 25. The pitcher broke her previous record of 24 strikeouts, with 25 strikeouts against Chalker, a figure that left even her coach in awe. “Her previous record was already impressive,” said Coach Keegan. “Most pitchers would take three or four games to get to 25 strikeouts. Knowing that every time she takes the mound against anyone, we have a chance to win and that’s special.”
Capping off a historic night on the mound, the team also lit up the field with their bats. The offense came alive early and never let up. A walk-off double from Junior Melina Rodriguez in the bottom of the ninth finished off Chalker with a final score of 5-4.
With the game tied and on the line, Independence didn’t panic. They didn’t change a thing. “Our thinking in the bottom of the ninth was the same as every other inning,” Keegan said. “Get someone on, get someone over, and get someone in.”
And that’s exactly what they did. Senior Rabecca Gibson got things started with a leadoff base hit. Freshman Julia Chait moved her over with a perfectly executed bunt. Brooke Vollman came through with a scrappy infield hit to load the bases. Chalker, not wanting to let Manfredonia beat them, made the call to walk her intentionally. It was a calculated move and one that made sense on paper.
It was the right idea. Just the wrong team to try it against.
“That’s why Melina [Rodriguez] bats behind Lila,” Keegan explained. “to protect against teams walking her.” She stepped up and made them pay, sending a walk-off double into the gap to end it.
The night ended in a team victory, and a record that will be etched in the history books.
