The IHS PTO hosted an ice cream social for students and staff during 5A and 5C lunch periods on Thursday, April 16. Mrs. Suleika Stray, President of the Music Boosters and PTO member, ran the event and helped serve ice cream.
“For the last year, I have developed this sort of assembly line technique for doing ice cream. The night before, we pre-scooped all of the individual ice cream cups, which took us about an hour to do 300 servings,” Stray explained. “Then I took all my numbers from the summertime, multiplied them, and that’s how I knew how much of each topping to get”.
Stray worked with other PTO members and some IHS staff, including Mrs. Denise Mindzora, the PTO president, Mr. Mike Janatovich, Ms. Caroline Quinn, Mrs. Jessica Carmean, and Mrs. Hilary Sahli. Mindzora came up with the idea to hold this ice cream social and recruited Stray and other parents to help lead and manage the project.
“It takes a lot of volunteer help to run these things. We usually have an idea, and then have people like Mrs. Stray offer to run the event, and parents usually follow,” Mindzora stated.
PTO ran this event for student hospitality, a second time for this school year, with the hot chocolate bar that happened before winter break. These events were hosted purely for students to enjoy themselves.
“We’re looking into an ice cream truck or a coffee truck or similar things, so we hope to do a couple more next school year,” Mindzora added.
After the event, Stray and Mindzora walked the halls, giving away the final cups of ice cream to students and staff.
Overall, the ice cream social was an event for students to enjoy themselves with a nice, cold treat as spring comes in full swing.
